Pupil Leadership
At Gateway Academy, we believe that children should have a meaningful voice in school life and opportunities to develop as confident, responsible young leaders.
Our Pupil Leadership Team (PLT) gives pupils opportunities to contribute to the everyday running of the Academy, help make decisions, support other children and act as positive role models.
Through pupil leadership, children develop important skills including confidence, responsibility, teamwork, communication, organisation and empathy.
What does being a Pupil Leader mean?
We expect our Pupil Leaders to:
- Follow the Gateway Rules
- Inspire those around them
- Lead by example
- Show empathy and consideration towards others
- Be polite and well-mannered
- Be positive role models for their peers
Pupil Leaders are also expected to attend meetings, follow instructions, help other children and complete the responsibilities attached to their role.
Our Pupil Leadership Team
There are a range of leadership opportunities across the Academy, allowing pupils to contribute to different areas of school life.
Head Girl, Head Boy and Prefects
Our senior pupil leaders are important role models for the whole school. They help welcome visitors, support the wider Pupil Leadership Team and represent Gateway at school events.
School Council Leaders
Children from Years 1–6 represent the views of their peers and help ensure that pupil voice contributes to decisions about school life. There are two representatives from each year group.
Digital Leaders
Our Digital Leaders from Years 3–6 support computing and digital life across the Academy and help other pupils use technology confidently and responsibly.
Playground Leaders
Our Year 5 Playground Leaders encourage positive activities at playtime, help organise games and play sessions and support children who may be looking for someone to play with.
Attendance and Assembly Leaders
Our Year 6 Attendance and Assembly Leaders help promote good attendance and punctuality. They support assemblies, share attendance information, celebrate good attendance and help maintain attendance displays.
Reading Leaders
Our Year 6 Reading Leaders help support the library, organise and scan books, read with younger children, help run book clubs and promote a love of reading throughout Gateway.
Sports Leaders
Our Year 6 Sports Leaders help promote sport and physical activity across the Academy. They help organise equipment, support sports clubs and assist with activities at playtimes and lunchtimes.
Eco Leaders
Our Year 6 Eco Leaders help us become a more sustainable school. They promote recycling, encourage a greener environment and help monitor the use of lights and interactive whiteboards.
Office Leaders
Our Year 6 Office Leaders work alongside our office team, helping with appropriate errands, messages, printing and organisational tasks.
How are Pupil Leaders chosen?
Each year, pupils are invited to consider which leadership role they would like to take on. They read the relevant job description and complete an application explaining why they would be suitable for the role.
For elected roles such as School Council, pupils have the opportunity to put themselves forward and their classmates vote fairly and respectfully for their representatives.
Celebrating Pupil Leadership
Taking on a leadership role is both a responsibility and an achievement. We recognise and celebrate the time, effort and commitment our Pupil Leaders give to helping make Gateway an even better place to learn.
